The overall aim of the PROF-XXI project is to build capacity for the development of teaching and learning centres (CEAS) for Latin American Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the 21st century, taking into account the current situation in the region, and the current situation of the 4 Latin-American HEIs that will serve as models (2 public HEIs and 2 private HEIs of different sizes in Guatemala and Colombia).
The origin for this project is the aim among Latin American HEIs to improve the quality of their teaching and learning processes, as a result of the very rapid growth of higher education institutions the region.
One of the most urgent priorities it to ensure that professionals and teachers at HEIs have sufficient training and support to successfully lead effective processes for educational innovation, both in face-to-face and virtual learning, as well as mixed or hybrid (blended) education.
Teachers' lack of preparation to provide high-quality education is an especially serious problem in Guatemala and Colombia, where a large number of private education institutions have been created and charge very high tuition fees, although this is not a factor that differentiates the quality of education received by the graduates.
